[2] Paul Coll (NZL) 3-0 Dimitri Steinmann (SUI) 14-12, 11-6, 11-4 (50m)
Dimitri was playing out of his skin and had his chances to take the first game – game changer probably – but sadly, got injured in the middle of the second game. Back spasm, he got his 3m injury time, and despite Derek Ryan’s magic touch, the Swiss was never able to compete to his best level.
At the start of the third, the two players engaged in a long and gruelling rally, and the poor Swiss was grunting in pain. He never stopped trying, but it was heartbreaking. Not wanting to deprive his opponent of his victory, he played until the last point. And that, my friends, is called class.
Funny moment, at 10/3, match ball, Paul made an unforced error, which led our Dimitri to go “nervous?” … adding seconds later “it’s a joke”…. Oh Bless him…
Paul
“For sure, it was pinging round at the start, I wasn’t really finding my targets very well, especially to the back, it was very frantic very half court. So just tried to tidy that, I was more happy with the last 2, obviously he went off with the injury break, but I thought I found the corners better, played bit better and kind of woke up
“100%, I have done very well in London and the UK across my career, I think it’s because I’ve got so many friends from back home in London, and they come support me very well, I love playing in England”
“We have played in last two tournament, this is the third tournament in row that we play, been fortunate enough to get a couple wins and hopefully will get the win tomorrow”
