R1: Juan 3-2 Nicolas

Juan Vargas (COL) 3-2 Nicolas Mueller (SUI)  9-11, 5-11, 12-10, 11-6, 15-13 (66m)

In fact, I’m the one to blame for the Swiss defeat, as he was winning 2/0 when I managed to sit down behind the court, after finishing my first report. He even went to 8/4, looking pretty good out there again, but Juan managed to force a few tough and difficult rallies at that point, and we could see how Nici was struggling physically. He lost that game – after having a match ball 10/9 – 12/10 in 10m game.

The fourth is even more obvious of Nici’s lack of legs, up 5/0 he lost the game in 8m, 11/6.

He started to find his second (third, fourth) wind in the 5th. The rallies was extremely intense, both player picking up impossible shots, and visiting the court a few times. 2/2, 4/4, 5/5, Nici his nose just ahead, but back at 9/9.

Three match balls will follow for Juan, then one finally for Nici, 13/12, but a massive tin at that point, and the fourth match ball was the good one, 15/13. 20m game alone…

Juan : “Today was about playing with that not giving up mentality. I gave it my 100%, even when I wasn’t playing my best squash.

In the first two games, he played much better, but I still felt I was playing ok, lost a bit of focus at the end of the first game, but I still felt I could win. It was just a question of telling myself of not letting go, not caring about what the score was, keep believing

And then I saw the momentum changing, you feel it, you notice it, but it could have gone either way, so I’m super happy, it’s probably my best win on PSA so far.

I feel that my determination to win probably comes from my Colombian culture. Also the conditions we play in over there, you learn to win with a lot of gritt, and a lot of heart. And when we have Latin events, you see your team mates living it all on court, even if they lose, and that I think is something I managed to keep in my game after all those years on the Tour.

At the end, I stayed really composed, although there were a lot of calls, the adrenaline was flying but but I still managed to stay somehow calm and thankfully, it paid off.”
