Mariam Metwally (EGY) 3-2 Torrie Malik (ENG) 11-8, 7-11, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10 (60m)
Mariam Metwally delivered a courageous performance to come from 8-3 down in the fifth to defeat England’s Torrie Malik in a deciding game tie-break.
Interesting to know that Mariam’s compatriot, Nour Aboulmakarim, was actually coaching her during the match…
Mariam
“That was definitely a tough one. I know how tricky she is to play. She has been playing very well recently, so I was expecting a good match. I think I was trying to stay calm and focus as much as I could, and it worked.
“In the game breaks, I was just told to play drop shots. Because I think most of the match I was a bit stressed and I was playing a lot of a backwards game. At the end I was just trying to stay calm and stay focussed.
“I think I’m playing Melissa next, so I’m looking forward to that. I’m excited and hopefully I can keep going.”
